Snow Removal Buying Guide
Most people think that they don't need a snow thrower or snow blower – until it snows. Then winter's harsh reality sets in. Equip yourself for Canadian winters with one of the premium performers from Canadian Tire. No snow too light, no snow too wet.
No Snow too Light, No Snow too Wet
- No matter what the conditions, there's a snow thrower to tackle them
- If light, fluffy snow is the worst you'll see this winter, an ultra light-duty or light-duty snow thrower is probably all you'll need
- For normal snowfalls, with accumulations of 4-12" (10-30 cm) a medium-duty snow thrower is ideal
- For winter's worst - thick, heavy, wet snow – a heavy-duty snow thrower will provide plenty of muscle

Single- or two-stage?
When you're deciding between a single- or two-stage machine, there are a few things to consider
- Single stage snow throwers are intended only for light-duty snow removal
- Single stage snow throwers have rubber augers that pull snow in as the paddles section of the blade propels the snow to the rear and up through the chute. Because the rubber blade makes contact with the ground, it should only be used on smooth paved areas
- Two-stage snow throwers are designed for medium- to heavy-duty snow removal
- Two-stage snow throwers have spiral augers that break up the snow and draw it towards a high-speed impeller located at the back. The impeller discharges the snow through the chute at a high rate of speed
Why Choose Electric Over Gas?
- Ideal for smaller, urban properties
- No tune-ups, and no gas and oil to worry about
- Lightweight and easy to manoeuvre
- Easy to start
- Less noisy, more environmentally friendly
Maintain your Machine
- At the beginning of the season, check the level and colour of the engine oil. Make sure tires are properly inflated and wheel axles are greased. Lubricate the auger, axle and chute crank bushings, control cables and springs. Remove belt cover to check condition of auger and wheel belt drives. Look for any bent or missing bolts in the auger shaft and ensure that they are replaced only with proper shear bolts – regular bolts won't work
- Run the machine for a few minutes after each use to prevent freeze-up – clogged snow in the auger/impeller can freeze solid
- Fill the tank after each operation to reduce condensation of water in the fuel
- Never put you hand into the chute to unclog snow while the machine is operating
- Check bolts and belts for wear and proper tightness
- At the end of each season, disconnect the spark plug wire, clean the machine, add fuel stabilizer to remaining gas in the fuel tank and run the engine for five minutes to bring the stabilized gas through the system. In 4-cycle engines, drain existing oil and replace with new (SAE 5W-30)
- Cover with a waterproof cover that allows air to circulate to prevent condensation and rust
- Store inside a dry ventilated area on a hard, level surface
- Check manufacturer's operating manual regarding extended storage
