Soccer Shoes

Soccer shoe sizing is generally the same as street shoes, although soccer shoes (cleats) tend to fit narrower in the toe. They should sit snug on the heel to prevent slipping and blisters, and fit comfortably in the toe box area.

Soccer Shin Pads

Shin pads (or shin guards) should cover most of the area between ankle and knee. Measure right below where your child’s knee bends to an inch from the top of their shoe. This is the proper measurement for a shin guard. Many manufacturers label their guards according to age, or as Junior or Medium for those under 5’4” in height.

Soccer Ankle Guards

Ankle guards are important for youth soccer because kids are just learning to control their kicks. They protect the ankles and Achilles tendon against direct hits, but are soft and flexible enough to allow movement. Look for shin pads that are either designed with built-in ankle guards, or come with ankle guards that can be attached or removed as preferred.

Soccer Shorts

Soccer shorts should be comfortable and loose enough to allow a full range of movement, but not be too big and baggy to affect speed and mobility. Soccer shorts are available in youth sizes, and while similar to regular clothing sizes, the current style trend is a larger fit.
